Christmas decorations looking a little tired this year? Or perhaps you want to add a little extra sparkle to the tree, but don’t want to invest in an entirely new collection of decorations? No problem – Carla Bagshaw has a fab craft project to show you how you can give your tired old Christmas baubles a new lease of life, and add a little creative and crafty sparkle to your tree decor this Christmas!
You Will Need:
How to Upcycle Your Christmas Baubles
Step 1:
Paint a thin layer of PVA glue onto your chosen red bauble, creating a nice even layer of glue, whilst also creating a nice shape for the flakes to adhere to.
Step 2:
Use a paintbrush to delicately press the gilding flakes onto the glued surface of the bauble. Take your time to ensure a nice even spread of the gold; the more gently you can apply the flakes, the better end result you can achieve.
Step 3:
Hold the bauble gently in your hand for a few minutes to allow the glue to dry.
Step 4:
Gently use your finger or a perfectly dry and smooth cloth to rub (burnish) the surface of the gold flakes (it is important that the glue is completely dry first).
As you rub your finger over the flakes you will notice that the surface will become shiny and start to reflect the light more.
Step 5:
The last step is really simple: just clean up your bauble using a cloth, tidy up any remaining loose flakes… and your Christmas creation ready to be hung.
Repeat with all your baubles, until every one is glistening with a new golden finish, then hang them on the tree. Rope in the rest of the family to help, and you’ll be finished in time for a hot chocolate in front of the fire… perfect!
